Multi-State Tax Estimator For Solopreneur Freelancers
About the build

Why We Built Multi-State Tax Estimator

We built Multi-State Tax Estimator because solopreneurs were getting blindsided by state tax add-ons every April. The pain was clear: TurboTax and other DIY tax software bundle federal-only pricing, leaving multi-state earners to discover $90–150+ in unexpected state filing fees mid-return.

The Problem We Spotted

Freelancers, remote consultants, and digital workers are increasingly earning across multiple states. But existing tax software prices state filings as hidden add-ons, creating sticker shock and causing procrastination on multi-state filings. State tax compliance was being deferred or skipped entirely because the cost was opaque.

Why Not Use TurboTax or TaxAct?

Both are excellent full-service tax solutions. But they bundle state filings as premium add-ons. Multi-State Tax Estimator is a laser-focused tool: it estimates your multi-state liability and forecasts your filing cost upfront. It's not a replacement for TurboTax—it's a complement that saves solopreneurs from surprises and lets them budget accurately for taxes.

Our Design Philosophy

Single purpose. Transparent pricing. No hidden tiers. Enter your work states and estimated income; get your state-by-state liability and total filing cost. Export a summary for your accountant or use it to file yourself with confidence.

What's Next

We're adding nexus-detection rules for specific industries (digital services, e-commerce, professional services) and quarterly estimated payment schedules. We're also exploring integrations with TurboTax and accountant platforms so your estimator output feeds directly into your tax software.
